A 49-year-old Maryville resident was arrested earlier this week on distribution of methamphetamine charges. Joe A. Downing was arrested in Des Moines Iowa.

Nodaway County Sheriff Randy Strong says the warrant was a joint effort between his office and Maryville Public Safety.

"They had an individual that was used to purchase methamphetamine from Mr. Downing on one occasion.  And then we took over and on 2 different occasions, we covertly purchased methamphetamine using deputies to control the buys and purchase methamphetamine.  We were looking at him for some on other things when we found out he had left the state.  So we weren't in a big rush to serve the warrant on him.  Then just recently, it became apparent we needed to deal with that, so issued a warrant and found out he was in Des Moines.  We contacted the authorities there and they picked him up for us."

Strong also says that Downing was known to the Sheriff's office as an individual selling meth in the area.

"We knew about him.  We allege that he's responsible for moving quite a bit methamphetamine. The exact amount we don't know, but watching him and the amount of years he's been in there, he's a pretty big player in this area."

Downing is awaiting extradition in Iowa.
